Lessons and Passes in Banff

Banff: Ski Banff’s Mount Norquay offers some of the most challenging runs in the region. The forested slopes offer shelter from the icy winds and harsh storms that plague other resorts in the Canadian Rockies.

Mount Norquay offers very easy skiing in the Cascade area, good cruising runs off the Spirit and Pathfinder lifts and seriously challenging runs by the North American lift. Though smaller than Sunshine Village and Lake Louise its convenient location and short lift queues more than makes up for it.

Beginners

There are many green runs (easy).

The Cascade Quad chair services most of the beginner runs. The Norquay Hoodoo off the Spirit Quad lift is one the best.

Intermediates

Norquay Banshee off the Pathfinder Express has some of the best snow conditions. As the terrain lies deep in a valley under some very steep summits, it has a really rugged and interesting feeling. It also provides some of the most weather sheltered terrain in the area.

Advanced

From the top of the North American Chair the views over Banff and the Bow Valley are spectacular. For hardcore Norquay regulars, no runs anywhere can match Upper Lone Pine and Gun Run, a black-diamond duo as demanding as any trails in the Rockies. Memorial Bowl isn't a bowl at all but a generous, consistent bank with an average 34-degree pitch that rarely feels the blade of a snowcat. Even the North American, the easiest of these runs, legitimately earns its black diamond.

Snowboarding

There is a solid half pipe and impressive Snowboard Park located near the base of the cascade lift. Outside the park there are also monster moguls and steep chutes off the Pathfinder Express lift.
