Surrounded by this majestic scenery, you have more than 100 places to choose from in Banff to eat. At the top of the scale you will find the fine dining establishments of Le Beaujolais and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. In the middle, there is everything from the casual food of Earl's, and the Barbary Coast, to the ethnic cuisine at the Balkan (Greek), Pad Thai (Thai), Suginoya (Japanese), Silver Dragon (Chinese), Guido's (Italian), and the Grizzly House (Swiss fondue). At the bottom end of the scale are many chains, such as McDonald's (hamburgers), Phil's (pancakes & comfort food) and the many smaller establishments. Here is a selection of what is available: The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel Located at 405 Spray Avenue, the Hotel has the Bow Valley Grill and Rundle Lounge. The dinner buffet at the Bow Valley Grill is not cheap, but the food and variety are great, the ambience is elegantly casual, and the restaurant has a fabulous view. The same view is available with a much more intimate ambiance from the Rundle Lounge, a small area surrounded by wall-to-ceiling windows. The Rundle Lounge offers high tea at certain times, and at other times drinks and an elegant light meal/appetiser menu is available.
Buffalo Mountain Lodge Located at Tunnel Mountain Road, the Buffalo Mountain Lodge is recommended for its spectacular cuisine and carefully-chosen wine list. The wine list has 675 carefully chosen selections, and has been recognised by the Wine Spectator as one of the world’s best. The cuisine has been presented at the James Beard Culinary Arts Foundation and has earned accolades in Gourmet, Bon Appetit, and Western Living. The interior mixes rustic architecture with refined details. The main courses, which feature Rocky Mountain fish and game, include medallions of ranch elk with sour cherry compote, seared halibut on black rice, and roasted pork tenderloin with morel mushroom cream sauce. Chicken, duck, caribou, lamb, and salmon also join the list of options available.
Balcan Located at 120 Banff Avenue, the Balcan is a popular Greek restaurant. This family-owned restaurant serves authentic Greek cuisine. Traditional dishes include: broiled calamari, dolmades, moussaka, and souvlaki. Other options include stuffed peppers, grilled salmon, Greek ribs, lemon chicken, and several different pasta dishes. The house specialty, roast lamb, is fantastic, as are the broiled lamb chops and Balkan steak. The Rocky Mountain Platter for two is an assortment of Greek delights at a reasonable price, and is enough to feed two or three people with smaller appetites. Tuesday nights are Greek nights, with plate smashing, belly dancing, etc. all included in the price of your meal! Lunch specials are also available.
Sushi House Located at 304 Caribou Street, the Sushi House is a popular family restaurant. Service is largely mechanised at this kaiten sushi bar, where a small train cars circle the dining room. Diners look for their favourites and pluck the dishes from the train, eating as much or as little as they want. Colour-coded plates then indicate to the servers the prices of each selection, and they tally up the cost and present the bill. The most popular rolls and choices are constantly supplied to the train, but customers are free to make requests to the chef as well. The whole experience is fun and entertaining.
