What are the shop opening hours? Almost all the shops in Banff open seven days per week, including bank holidays. Usual opening times are 1000h to 1800h some might be open till 2100h and grocery stores often offer a 24 hour service, which also applies to petrol stations that have a convenient store attached. Are credit cards and travellers cheques accepted? Common credit cards (Visa, Master Card and American Express) are widely accepted, however, you might consider carrying some Traveler's Cheques in small denominations. Those are generally accepted like cash and have the advantage of being insured.

What type of clothing should I wear? Even in summer a sweater or jacket should be packed. Warm coats, snow boots, hats and gloves are required in winter. Rain gear is recommended, as are sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. Dress is casual - ties and evening wear are not usually required, even at fine dining restaurants. There are many sportswear shops in Banff and Lake Louise than can equip you with proper clothing for activities and the season.
Where can I get or exchange foreign currency in Banff? Visitors can exchange their currency at Canadian banks or foreign exchange brokers on Banff Avenue. Some hotels and restaurants accept US currency - but the exchange rate may be lower than that posted by financial institutions. How do I report a theft in Banff? Report the theft to the police or your resort representative as soon as possible. You will need a police report number to claim on your insurance. If you have lost your rental equipment and you don’t have insurance cover with the hire shop, you will probably have to pay for the skis (replacement cost value) and then claim on your insurance. What do the different colours on the piste/trail map mean? Green Circle : Very easy with gentle runs. Beginner level and nursery slopes. Blue Square: The gradient has increased, can be difficult in places. Black Diamond: Very difficult and often steep. Advanced levels only. If the symbols are doubled this indicates an increased level of difficulty.
Are there any childminding or baby sitting services in Banff? The main winter establishments are the hotels, ski schools and creches.
Can I drink the water in Banff? Canadian tap water is among the cleanest in the world and is very safe to drink.

Can I get sunburned in winter? Yes. Due to the fact you are at high altitude and the reflecting properties off the snow. Make sure you use a high SPF sun block with moisturiser and always re-apply after any activity. Also wear eye protection even when it is cloudy.
Will I suffer from altitude sickness in Banff? You may experience breathlessness on exercising and slight tiredness due to the lack of oxygen. Make sure you drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and protect yourself against the sun as these are more likely to make you feel unwell.

Perogies (potato dumplings) with mashed potato fillings in flavours ranging from cheese and onion to pizza! Saskatoons (aka saskatoon berries) are a small purplish-blue berry native to Western Canada. It is a popular filling for pies and is also made into syrup and jam; it has a sort of almond-cherry flavour. Nanaimo bar is a very popular dessert. The traditional Nanaimo bar has three layers: a chocolate-flavoured crumb base, a butter-cream icing centre and a thick layer of chocolate on top.
